Hesh, you might also consider coloring the top in a solid tobacco brown.
Don are you coming around on the whole burst thing? (no sarcasm intended)
Actually, yes and no. I've always like bursts, especially as done by Kim Walker. What my eye has usually been accustomed to seeing though is a visual "frame" around it, i.e. either a white or light binding, such as Ivoroid. I prefer that to running the dark burst right into a dark binding. But that is growing on me because of Hesh's Koa guitar. I didn't like that combo on the guitar at first, but now I'm liking it fine enough. Still not sure I would want it on a guitar of mine personally, but it's grwoing on me.
Thoughts?
You're gonna make it look good no matter what you finally decide. That's my thought.

BTW, are you planning on making this with the shallower L-OO depth, or with the deeper, Nick Lucas, type body (I think that's what KW did in the photo you posted)?
The back side will be bound in Tiger Myrtle to blend
the back and sides together.

Thoughts?
Yes. You're a jerk.

That's exactly what I was planning to do with my mahogany!
Tortoise on the top, with a cut off of the sides as the back binding.

I think it will work...why not? If that's what works for you, do it! You know what you want and what you like, and that's the way you get there.
One of the things I like about Heshtone Guitars is that they don't necessarily follow the established norms of guitarmaking. That's also the reason I really like Wade Sylvester's instruments, and Mike Doolin's. Different is good.
Personally, more often than not, I make decisions on the fly about things like purflings and binding schemes. Usually I'll build the box, and then hold different woods etc up against the box to see what appeals to me visually. I built a Black Acacia OM like that, and ended up with some very orange-looking cocobolo for bindings. I would have leaned toward ebony if I were planning ahead. I wouldn't have chosen that up front, but waiting until the box is together gives me more of a sense of the artist's brush in a sense. It evolves of itself, and what comes out on the canvas is what happens through inspiration and less by planning. The coco worked, and it left me feeling like the guitar was more artistic than if I had planned every bit up front. Ok, I'm sure some folks would think that's a bit silly, but it works for me in the same way that Hesh's planning out the details works for him.
So I say go for it if that's what works for you.

Nice work Hesh. I'm always impressed by both the quality and speed of your work, especially given your humble beginnings (the loo) when you first started.
